ALTA ZUFELT
Longtime Logan resident and businesswoman
LOGAN, UTAH: Alta Zufelt, age ninety-two, died
of natural causes in Logan on January 21, 2006. She
was born in Logan on March 27, 1914 to Nephi L. Larsen
and May Taylor Larsen. Alta graduated from Preston
High School in 1933 and moved with her family to
Logan. There she met, and in 1937 married, DeVaun C.
Zufelt (1910-1976), who was then an art student at
Utah State Agricultural College. After his graduation
with a BA degree, they moved to Roosevelt, Utah and
Salina, Utah for his teaching assignments. During
World War II they moved to Berkley, California, where
DeVaun worked in the Kaiser shipyards. After the war,
they returned to Logan and built their new home on 5th
North.
In Logan DeVaun opened a paint store and engaged
in a commercial art business. By 1950 Alta, together
with her husband, opened and operated the Alta Motel,
which she continued to operate until 2004. With
continuous operation for more that fifty years, Alta
enjoyed her long and hard work running the motel and
providing accommodations to many travelers and tenants
from around the world. Many of these became friends,
especially the new residents staying at the motel when
moving into Logan. While actively operating the motel,
she was a longtime member of the Soroptimist business
and professional women's organization.
Alta was proud of her three children, all of
whom she encouraged to graduate from Utah State
University and to obtain graduate degrees. Weldon
Zufelt (1941-2004) was a corporate attorney in Kohler
Wisconsin. Karl Zufelt (1947) is currently a
practicing attorney in Northridge, California. Julie
Zufelt (1952), currently residing in Logan, obtained a
Master of Fine Arts at University of Cincinnati and
has been engaged in piano and dance teaching and
performance.
