Ida A. (Betty) Smith
Ida A. (Betty) Smith passed away peacefully in her
sleep on 18 February 2007.
Betty was born on July 7, 1921, in Lakeside, Nebraska,
the eldest of seven children born to Ida Eugenia
Sandoz and Albert Emil Ohlsen.
On January 23, 1946, Betty and her sister Clara
traveled to Oberlin, Kansas, to marry their
sweethearts who had recently returned from the war.
These two couples remained close through the years.
Betty and Raymond Wilbur Smith were the parents of a
daughter, Peggy Smith (Lee) Johnson, Logan, Utah; and
a son, Raymond William (Diane Simmons) Smith, Cedar
City, Utah. After 11 years of wedded bliss, her
husband passed away of cancer on 13 February 1957.
Betty lived in North Platte, Nebraska, for many years.
She moved her family to River Heights, Utah, in the
fall of 1965 and worked as a secretary in the
Department of Soil Science and Biometeorology at Utah
State University for 212 years until her retirement at
the age of 67.
Betty enjoyed many hobbies throughout her life:
genealogy, tole painting, counted cross-stitch,
crocheting, cooking, sewing, and gardening to name a
few. She held many positions in her church and was
always faithful in her callings. But, her family and
friends were her first love; her children,
grandchildren, great grandchildren, and close friends
all benefitted from her unfailing and unconditional
love.
She is survived by her two children, six
grandchildren: Terri Jacobs, Amanda (Clark) Krause,
Colleen Hewitt, Rebecca (Erik) Jorgensen, Jonathan
(Shannon) Smith, and Kathryn Smith, eight great
grandchildren, a sister Nancy (Edward) Pate, a brother
Dean (Kim) Ohlsen, a brother-in-law Ben Lee, a
sister-in-law Ruth Ohlsen, many nieces and nephews,
and many close friends. She was preceded in death by
her husband and his siblings (except for his brother
Phil Smith), her parents, two sisters: Clara Lee &
Helen Schoonover, two brothers: William Ohlsen and
Neil Ohlsen, a niece and three nephews.
Due to failing heath, Betty moved to the Logan Nursing
& Rehabilitation Center in May 2004. Her family
wishes to express their appreciation and gratitude to
the staff and residents of LNRC for the care, love,
and friendship given to her. She felt very loved.
A viewing will be held at Allen-Hall Mortuary at 6:00
PM on 20 February 2007. She will be buried in the
Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, Nebraska.
Condolences may be sent to the family at
Allen Mortuaries.
