William “Bill” Gilford Christley
William “Bill” Gilford Christley, 85, died at home on
Friday, December 1, 2006. Bill was born at home in
Salem, Virginia on September 7, 1921 to William
Gilford and Ivy May Ferguson Christley. He was the
fourth of five boys and the seventh of nine children.
He met Ella Theora Schofield while she was serving in
the Eastern Central States Mission for the LDS church.
After she was released he followed her home and they
were married in the Logan Temple on August 14, 1945.
They returned to Virginia where their first two
daughters were born. In 1948 they moved to California
where Ella’s parents lived and their third daughter
was born in 1951. They moved to Grantsville, Utah
where five of Bill’s siblings and their families
lived. Their son and fourth child was born in 1953.
They moved to Cache Valley in 1955 and lived first in
Logan and then Richmond. Ella passed away on her
birthday in 1991 and Bill learned to cook and take
care of his home.
Over the years, Bill held many positions in the Church
and was a volunteer at the Logan LDS Temple.
He retired in 1983 after working 25 years for Western
General Dairy (Cream O’Weber).
He is survived by his children Judy (Pat)
Christiansen, Logan; Donna (Sherm) Roper, Las Vegas;
Janice (Paul) Rowberry, North Logan and Robert (Zonna)
Christley, Smithfield. He has nine grandchildren and
15 great grandchildren. He is also survived by an
older brother, A. F. “Pete” Christley in Virginia and
his younger brother Grant Christley in Missouri.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday,
December 6, 2006 in the Richmond City Creek Ward
Chapel, 150 South 100 East, Richmond, with Bishop Kim
Braegger conducting. Friends may call at the
Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center, Logan, on Tuesday
evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and at the church on
Wednesday one hour prior to services. Interment will
be in the Richmond City Cemetery. Condolences may be
sent to the family at Allen Mortuaries.
