Boyd H. Stewart
Boyd H. Stewart, 86, passed away on December 29, 2005
at the Logan Regional Hospital.
Boyd was born on the 21st day of November, 1919, son
of Willie Helaman and Mabel Richards Stewart. His
pioneer and early Mormon heritage was a matter of
great importance to him and he worked to bridge the
gap between his progenitors and his posterity.
A graduate of Logan High School and Utah State
University, her married Sybil Shumway Stewart on May
21, 1943, in the Logan Temple while on leave while
serving in the Army Air Corps. Boyd served as a pilot
in the Army Air Corps. He loved flying and was proud
of his service to his country. He started a tradition
that has endured through three generations of proud
members of the military, defending freedom throughout
the world. He retired Lieutenant Colonel after having
trained pilots from many nations.
He started milking cows as a yong boy in the fields
west of Logan and never kicked the habit of farming.
He owned dairy farms in North Logan and in Weston,
Idaho and a ranch in Box Elder County. Boyd was also
a highly respected 5th grade teacher whose students
can still recite the poetry they learned in his class
years ago.
While war prevented him from serving a mission as a
young man, he and Sybil later served together in the
Texas Houston East Mission. He and Sybil also served
for many years in the Logan Temple. He spent his life
in service to community and political organizations
such as the Republican Party, the Sons of the Utah
Pioneers and the Lions Club. He also served as Mayor
of North Logan.
A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, he loved his church. He bore his
testimony to his family at every opportunity. He
valued those who married into his family as much as
his own children. He taught us well; he treasured the
unity he and Sybil fostered. He is a tremendous
example to each generation of his family. Even though
he was 86 years, he was not old, because he involved
himself in the lives of his grandchildren and their
friends.
He and Sybil expected each of us to adhere to the
family motto that hangs on the wall in each of our
homes: “This Family’s motto is Duty, Honor and Service
to God, Family and Country”.
Boyd and Sybil are the parents of ten children: Boyd
William (Tina), Catherine (Robert) Wood, Julie Wood,
Ted (Lora), Richard (Sue), Mary (Brian) Tarbet, Mike
(Bonnie), Chris (Evie), Heather (Dale) Lyman and Tim
(Marcia). He and Sybil have 45 grandchildren and 39
great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his
brother Lynn (Laura) Stewart of North Logan and his
sister, June Spackman of Kaysville.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon in Tuesday,
January 3, 2006 in the North Logan Stake Center, 2750
North 800 East in North Logan. A viewing will be held
on Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the
Allen-Cranney Mortuary, 420 East 1800 North in North
Logan and prior to services at the Stake Center from
10:30 to 11:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be
made to the Perpetual Education Fund of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Condolences may be sent to the family at
Allen Mortuaries.
