Don Q. Dalley, 85, of Smithfield, passed away at his home on Tuesday, October 4, 2005, after a brief illness. He was born March 17, 1920 in Sugar City, Idaho, the fifth of eleven children, to Abram and Stella Dalley. The family later moved to Dayton, Idaho. Don attended school in Preston and Weston where he was elected student body president.

He married Ione Rich on February 11, 1942 in the Logan LDS Temple. She died November 20, 1974. He married Cleone Petersen on June 6, 1975 in the Logan LDS Temple. Don served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints serving in many callings including Bishop, High Council, Temple Officiator and home teacher. One of his more unique accomplishments was serving in the West Central States Mission with a young family at home and later attending USU, receiving his B.S. degree in English.

Don was also civic minded, serving on Dayton and Smithfield City Councils, Smithfield Library Board and was member of the Lions Club.

He loved the Lord, he loved the land, and he loved people, parades, and propeller driven aircraft. But most of all, he loved his family. He was a farmer and a master teacher, loved and revered by his students. Don loved the classics of literature, teaching classes in Novels and Short Stories at Sky View High School. He and Cleone researched, wrote, and published a history of his beloved Dayton entitled, “The Hills of Home”.

Whether nurturing young seeds or young minds, he gave it his all.

Don was a warm, friendly man with a terrific sense of humor. He enlivened things where ever he went and people loved him. He was an avid reader, especially of history and his interest in aircraft resulted in his immeasurable fondness of books on World War I and II. He could identify any plane that flew in those wars.

Survivors include his wife, Cleone of Smithfield; his children: Carol Child, Brent Dalley, Brenda Schvaneveldt, Alan Dalley and their spouses; his stepchildren: Lynn Sanduk, Kris Foltz, Karen Johnson, Robert Petersen, Dave Petersen, Doug Petersen and their spouses; his siblings: MarDean Ririe, Stella Manning and Frank Dalley. Don has 30 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 8, 2005 at the Smithfield 16th ward chapel, 625 East 600 South. A viewing will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening, October 7, at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield and Saturday morning at the church from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Burial will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Smithfield American Legion. Condolences may be extended to the family online at Nelson Funeral Home.
