Dean R. Porter
DR. DEAN O. PORTER passed away at the age of 88, on
the 23rd of September 2007 in Santa Cruz , California
after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis and
peripheral artery disease. Dean was born in Logan,
Utah on March 21, 1919, the second son of Dr. Ralph
Orlando Porter and Vivian Ericson. He married his
Logan High School sweetheart, Eleanor Hatch Parkinson,
on 21 March 1941.
Following bachelor degree courses at
USU, he studied dentistry at the University of
Southern California, served in stateside hospitals as
a first lieutenant in the Army during WWII, and then
finished his DDS degree at Northwestern University in
1947.
Dr. Porter was a well respected health care
professional with a thriving practice which spanned
thirty-seven years. His loyal patients regretted his
announcement of retirement in 1984. He was an active
member of the “Beehive Academy,” a group of Utah
dentists who organized continuing education classes
for themselves, bringing in expert lecturers from
around the country to keep abreast of the latest
techniques in dentistry. He was recommended by the
office of the Utah Governor to serve as one of the
Utah State Board of Dental Examiners, an appointment
he filled for five years.
Dr. Porter served on the USU
Alumni Council and USU Alumni board of directors and
on the Logan Golf and Country Club board of directors,
and actively participated in the Logan Lion’s Club for
many years.
He is preceded in death by his wife,
Eleanor, and by his brothers, Ralph, Alan, and Van.
Surviving family members include his brother, Gordon
Eric Porter and wife Lorraine, of Tucson, Arizona, his
son Robert Dean Porter of Corralitos, California, his
daughter Gloria Eleanor Pope and husband Charles, of
Santa Cruz, California, and his five grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at the Logan Cemetery
on Saturday, September 30, 2007 at 11:00 a.m.
