Doris E. Holmgren died Sunday, January 16, 2005, at the age of 90. She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Oscar and Marie Edstrom on January 14, 1915.

Doris married Arthur H. Holmgren in 1934. In 1943 Doris and Art moved to Logan, along with their four children, where Art accepted a position on the faculty of the Botany Department at Utah State University. Doris worked for the Soil Conservation Service for a number of years, but her main focus was as partner to her husband’s career as a botanist. They shared a love for classical music, travel, and nature.

Both Doris and Art were second-generation Swedes, and she learned the art of Swedish cuisine from both her own mother and Art’s mother. Her New Year’s Day brunch was a favorite tradition with generous supplies of Swedish pancakes, lingonberries, saffron and limpa breads, and, for the initiated, pickled herring and lutefisk.

Doris was preceded in death by husband Arthur, son Dennis, and grandson David. She is survived by her children Noel (New York), Marianne (California), Judy (Wisconsin), seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to express thanks to Wing 1 of Sunshine Terrace for their loving care of her for the past three years. Thanks, also, to Dr. Steven S. Salisbury.

Friends may call at Allen-Hall Mortuary on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to a favorite charity.
