Austin Douglas Allen
HYRUM-A. Douglas Allen passed away peacefully on
September 4, 2006.
He was born March 26, 1914 in Hyrum, Utah to Austin
David (A.D.) and Georgia Obray Allen. His mother died
when he was six years old. His father then married
Vesta Rose, who reared him.
Douglas received his education in the Cache County
Schools, followed by obtaining a Bachelor of Science
degree in civil engineering from Utah State
Agricultural College in 1938. He was employed as a
civil engineer by the Utah State Road Commission, the
U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Geneva Steel Company, and
Thiokol Chemical Corporation. He was also a successful
dry-land wheat farmer in Hansel Valley, Box Elder
County, and a poultryman.
He married Ruth Emma Hanks on June 23, 1939 in the
Salt Lake LDS Temple.
They made their first home in Provo where their
children were born, and later moved to Hyrum.
He served in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints in many capacities including service in the
North Central States Mission prior to his marriage,
High Councilman, Bishop, Counselor in the Hyrum Stake
Presidency, and Patriarch. He and Ruth served a
mission together in the Pennsylvania Pittsburg
Mission, and as officiators in the Logan Temple.
Douglas was active in Hyrum City government where he
served on the City Council. He was very influential in
the upgrading of the city water systems. In their
later years he and Ruth were honored by the city as
exemplary citizens during the Fourth of July
celebration.
Douglas is survived by two sons, Arthur David Allen
(Janet) of Stansbury Park, Utah and Stanley Douglas
Allen (Karen) of Logan; one daughter, Carol Ann Allen
Lemon (Alvin) of Brigham City, Utah; one brother,
Robert G. Allen (Norene) of Logan; one sister, Merle
Jean Allen Dunkley of Layton, Utah; one
brother-in-law, Eugene Nielsen of Ogden, Utah; 14
grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Ruth
Emma Hanks
Allen who died February 1,2006; parents; two brothers,
Reid Woodrow Allen and Claron W. Allen and spouse,
Nora; three sisters, Drue Allen Larson and spouse,
Eldrid, Gloy Allen Henich and spouse, Emil, and Gwynne
Allen Nielsen; one son, Paul Hanks Allen; one
grandson, Daniel Charles Lemon.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday,
September 9, at the Hyrum 6th Ward Chapel, 455 East
100 South, Hyrum, with Bishop David Funk conducting.
There will be a viewing from 6 to 8 PM on Friday at
the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center, Logan, and from
9:30 to 10:30 AM preceding the funeral at the church
in Hyrum. Burial will be in the Hyrum Cemetery.
