Douglas H. Gregory, 92, passed away Monday, September 25, 2006 at his home in Smithfield, Utah.

He was born to Thomas Joseph Gregory and Mary Ann Hawkeswood on March 17, 1914 in Cove, Utah. He was raised in Lewiston, Utah and graduated from North Cache High School in 1934. While in high school, he participated in boxing, track, band, and cheerleading. He attended college in Logan at USAC to take Pre Vet courses. He then continued his education at Fort Collins, Colorado, attending the CSAC. Doug married Ruth West November 6, 1936. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple February 18, 1942. He continued his education in Colorado for the next three years after their marriage. He graduated from Colorado State College as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in May 1939.

He began practice in Lewiston for one year, then moved to Smithfield and continued his practice until his retirement. He lived in Smithfield until his death with the exception of two years, 1942-1944, while he served in the military.

Douglas had signed up with the Army Reserves while in college and was called into active service during World War II to be stationed in Los Angeles, California. He was there until May of 1944. He was honorably discharged from the Army of the United States, First Lieutenant, USAR and Captain, AUS on April 1, 1953.

He continued his practice throughout the Cache Valley area, and with the Smithfield Livestock Auction, in addition to being a co owner of the Ford and Gregory Construction company.

He was a High Priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he served in various responsibilities.

He belonged to the Kiwanis Club and the American Legion, and supported the 4-H clubs and Boy Scouts of America.

His children and racing horses was a hobby that became the hallmark of his life’s endeavors. Owning over 75 thoroughbred horses, he has raced them in Colorado, Montana, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, and Arizona. He continued this hobby until the time of his death.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Vela Taggart, Sylvia Gregory, Adline Done, Dora Egbert, Selena Low, Mary Lou Clemensen; a brother, Seth Gregory; and a son-in-law, Theron Archibald. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; children: Ray (Anna) Gregory of Smithfield, Utah; Darrell (Earleen) Gregory of Salt Lake City, Utah; Margaret (Cline) Hendrickson of Smithfield, Utah; Mary Jo (Ted) Hodges of Fruit Heights, Utah; Barbara (Joe) Kment of Ajo, Arizona; 19 grandchildren and 59 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon Friday, September 29, 2006 at the Smithfield 11th Ward Chapel, 79 East 200 South, Smithfield. Friends and family may call Thursday evening, September 28, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 South Main, Smithfield and Friday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the church prior to services.
