LOGAN, UTAH:Ernest Eugene Siler, 82, passed away Monday, November 28th 2005 at Terrace Grove Assisted Living Center. He was born June 10, 1923 in Pleasant View Utah, the son of John A. and Ruby Cornwall Siler. On April 26, 1945 he married Lorna Jean Ellis of Pocatello, Idaho in Salinas, California, just prior to his departure to the Philippines in World War II. On January 23, 1946 their marriage was sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.

Ernie grew up on a farm in Fort Hall, Idaho, and enlisted to serve in the Army in World War II. He was wounded while serving in the Philippines and was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon return from the war Ernie became the manager of Idaho Concrete in Pocatello, Idaho.

In 1953, Ernie moved to Logan, Utah to become an owner and manager of Ellis Equipment Company where he worked with family members and friends in the farm machinery business for many years before retiring in 1985.

Ernie’s life was spent in service to others and he enjoyed many years of boating, skiing, golf, camping and family activities, especially at the cabin at Bear Lake. He had a knack for making others happy, with a keen sense of humor and a special smile. He was known by all as a “true gentleman”. He was always concerned for others, and never complained.

Ernie devoted much of his time to the service of others including his community. He served as the president of the River Heights Lions Club, and as the Deputy District Governor in 1987 when he attended the Lions Club International Convention in Taipei, Taiwan. In March of 1998 Ernie received his “50 Year Pin” and was recognized for his half century of service to the Lions Club International. He was an avid supporter of Utah State University and a member of the USU Old Main Society.

Ernie served throughout his life in many church positions, including Bishoprics in Pocatello, Idaho and Logan, Utah, and he later served as the Bishop of the River Heights Second Ward. He also served with Lorna in a full time LDS mission at the Washington, D.C. Temple, and was later set apart as a Sealer in the Logan LDS Temple by Gordon B Hinckley.

Ernie was loved by all those who knew him at the Terrace Grove Assisted Living Center, where he resided for the last five years. He was an example of patience, kindness and enduring to the end. He was known for the twinkle in his eye and his ready smile. We express our thanks and heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Terrace Grove, to the Hospice attendants, and to Dr. Steven Salisbury.

Ernie was preceded in death by his wife Lorna J. Siler, his son James Ellis Siler, his parents, and two brothers (Cecil Siler and Lester Siler.) He is survived by his two sisters, Velma Hansen and Lucile Larsen, a brother, Harold Siler, five children, Maradee Petersen (Craig), Dale Siler (Chalyce), Richard Siler (Lynette), Lynn Siler (Joyce), Jon Siler (Marianne), a daughter-in-law Brenda Tullis (Blake), 26 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon, Saturday, December 3, 2005 at the Cliffside 2nd LDS Ward Building at 1350 Eastridge Drive in Logan. Friends and family may call Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Church, prior to services. Burial will be in the Providence Cemetery in River Heights with a military tribute by the American Legion. Condolences may be sent to the family online at Allen Mortuaries.
