Frank Purser Smith
Frank Purser Smith, 87, passed away on October 19,
2007 at the Veteran’s Nursing Home in Salt Lake City.
Frank was born October 10, 1920 to Donald E. and Fern
Purser Smith in Logan, Utah. He graduated from Logan
High School and attended Utah State University and
Weber State College. He played football for both
universities until he was called into the U.S. Army in
1942. He served during World War II in Germany and
France. After his discharge, he returned to Logan
where he married Valier Roos. They had five children.
They divorced, and in 1974 Frank married Fleda Ruth
Smith in the Logan Temple.
Frank loved the outdoors. Fishing was his passion,
and he won several awards for catching some “big
ones”. He was talented in many areas, including
woodworking, fly-tying, restoring fishing rods and
bicycles. Throughout his life, Frank owned a sporting
goods store, managed a restaurant at Beaver Ski Lodge,
worked at Hill Air Force Base, and worked in the USU
maintenance department, where he retired in 1984.
Frank was a loving father. The time he spent with
each child were treasured moments. Preceding Frank in
death are his parents, a sister, Barbara Gilgen, and a
brother, Rodney Smith. He is survived by his wife,
Fleda, five children; Kristine (Larry) Call, Kenneth
(Kitsy) Smith, Jennie (Dan) Gillespie, Matt (Kami)
Smith, and Cameron Smith; three step-children; John
(Katy) Terry Jr., Suzan (Michael) Will, and Cynthia
(Charles) Hailes. He is also survived by brothers,
Alan (Colleen) Smith and Robert Smith, 25
grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.
The Smith family expresses gratitude to Dr. Steven
Salisbury, Dr. Louise Tobey, and their staff for their
concern and care. Also they appreciate the staff of
the Veteran’s Nursing Home for the compassionate
services they provided for Frank during his months
there.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 23,
2007 at 1 p.m. in the Allen Hall Mortuary Chapel, 34
East Center St., in Logan, UT. Prior to the services,
family and friends are invited to visit from 11:30 to
12:30. Burial will be in the Logan City Cemetery with
military honors.
