WELLSVILLE, UTAH: Gene Boswell Maughan, 77 of Wellsville passed away November 5th, 2003 surrounded by his loving family at Logan Regional Hospital due to complications of a heart disease.

He was born September 4, 1926 in Wellsville, Utah. He was the son of Geddes Gunnell and Clara Boswell Maughan. He graduated from South Cache High School where he excelled in football, basketball and track. He was the captain of his high school football team. His love of sports led him to coach and support his children and grandchildren throughout his life.

He served in the United States Navy for two years at the end of World War II. He had a great love for his country. He worked as a dairy farmer for several years before becoming employed at Thiokol Chemical Corporation retiring after thirty years. He had a great love of the land and raised beef cattle throughout his life. His farm was one of his choicest possessions and hobbies. He loved to work hard and taught his children the value of work. He served on the Wellsville City Council for eight years.

He married his high school sweetheart, Jeanne Kellett, from Hyrum, Utah March 25, 1947. They were married in the Logan LDS Temple. Gene and Jeanne were an example to their family and friends on what a true, affectionate celestial marriage should be like. They loved one another and expressed their relationship in their actions and words.

Gene was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served the Lord in many ways throughout his life. He served in two bishoprics, worked with his wife in the Logan LDS Temple, and taught marriage and temple preparation classes to many members. He was a dedicated home teacher, especially to the widows in his wards. He was compassionate and was an example of a true saint.

His mother and father, two sisters Maxine Maughan and Maureen Norris and one brother Merlin Maughan precede him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne of Wellsville, Utah; three sons: Scott Gene (Robin) Maughan of Logan, Jan (Cheryl) Maughan of Wellsville, Rocky (Dixie) Maughan of Logan, and foster son, Eddie Hammitt of Farmington, New Mexico; three daughters: Relia Ann Maughan of Logan, Jill (Mike) Campos of Sandy, Brenda (Tab) Smith of Providence. He is also survived by twenty grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, one brother, Ray (Joyce) Maughan of Smithfield and two sisters Donna (Reid) Andreasen of Millville, Sharon Nielson of River Heights, sister-in-law Betty Maughan of River Heights and brother-in-laws Paul Nielson of Logan and Rosewel Norris of Idaho Falls.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 10, 2003 at 12:00 pm in the Wellsville LDS Stake Center, 30 South Center, Wellsville with Bishop Ray Stokes conducting. Friends and family may call Sunday, November 9th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Logan, and also at the church on Monday from 10:30 - 11 :30 am prior to the services. Interment will be in the Wellsville Cemetery with a military tribute by the American Legion.
