Hattie Jane (Jean) D. Munk
Mrs Hattie Jane (Jean) D. Munk, wife of the late Dr.
Newel E. Munk, died April 12, 2005 at home. She was
born April 22, 1904 at Bennion, Utah, the daughter of
Thomas W. and Nora Bennion Dimond.
She was graduated from the Granite High school and the
University of Utah. Later she received a master’s
degree from Brigham Young University and pursued
on-campus graduate studies at the universities of
Utah, Wisconsin, Hawaii and USC. A teacher by
profession, she taught English and social studies in
Utah, California and Hawaii.
She was married to Milton Morris Foster in Hawaii.
They were later divorced.
Dr. John C. Carlisle was the principal of Payson high
school when she taught there. When he learned she had
returned to Utah and was available for employment, he
suggested that she apply at the local school board
since Inez Maughan was being retired. Mrs. Munk came
to Logan in 1946 and has resided here since.
In December 1950 she was married to Dr. Newel E.
Munk. Following their marriage, she taught for
several years. Then when Dr. Munk retired from the
practice of dentistry, they traveled extensively and
enrolled in many Institute classes.
Throughout her earlier life Mrs. Munk was active in
LDS church activities. Before coming to Logan she had
taught in Primary and YWMIA organizations and for
several years was the Bennion ward organist. Since
residing in Logan she taught the Gospel Doctrine class
in Sunday School. For many years she was a member of
the Clio Club and active in the First District Dental
Society.
She is survived by Dr. Munk’s daughters: Maridean
Ryberg, Veda Romney, Jeanette Woolley (James) of
Salt Lake City and Joan Gunn (Thomas) of Park City,
Utah.
Funeral Services will be at the Allen-Hall Mortuary
chapel on Saturday, April 16th at 12:00 noon. Friends
and family may gather one hour prior to the services.
Burial will be at the Logan City cemetery.
The family would like to extend appreciation to the
staff at Terrace Grove for the attentive care they
provided her for many years. They would also like to
extend their appreciation to Dalline Cooper, a loyal
friend.
