Janice Hurst Hedin
Janice Hurst Hedin, 73, returned to her loving
creator on Sunday, June 17, 2007 due to complications
of pneumonia, surrounded by loving family.
Janice was born in St. Johns, Apache County, Arizona
December 6, 1933 to Lorin Winslow Hurst and Hester
Richey. While very young her family moved to Ogden,
Utah where her father worked as a carpenter and
builder with his brothers.
Janice attended Ogden City schools and graduated from
Ogden High School. While attending Weber College she
served as the President of La-Dianida (LD) and also
swam competitively for the college. She graduated
with her Associates Degree from Weber. While at
Weber, she fell in love with a young man who had also
been a neighborhood friend, Duane E. Hedin, and they
were married in the Salt Lake Temple on May 28, 1954.
Her Duane quickly became a special part of the Hurst
family, becoming very close to and active with her
brothers and father. Janice and Duane were truly best
friends, and their lives revolved around each other.
The highlights of their lives are times spent with
each other and their boys.
Janice was an accomplished pianist always in demand
by local choirs and soloists. Music remained an
important part of her life with her husband and five
sons.
With her oldest son only 12, she took her young
family to Indiana and supported her husband as he
completed his graduate degrees at Indiana University.
Without her financial contribution and emotional
strength, that family adventure could never have
happened. The family returned to Logan, Utah where
Duane served as a professor at Utah State for over 25
years. She was the model mother and wife giving of
herself every minute of her life. So many individuals
learned compassion and charity from this beautiful
woman.
Janice also worked professionally as a paralegal for
over 20 years at a local law firm. We have heard from
attorneys at other firms testify that Janice was their
biggest help as they got started in their practices.
One of the deepest loves of her life was working with
the young women in the LDS church. Some of her
choicest friendships were developed with other adult
leaders and with the young women themselves. This
continued to be an experience where she found
strength, hope, peace and testimony.
And of course another defining aspect of Janice’s
life was her 5 boys. She loved her boys more than
life. “Greater love hath no man than this”, and her
boys returned that level of love. She reared 5
missionaries and 5 college graduates. She often
received letters through the years from families
having been taught the gospel by her sons throughout
the world.
Anyone having the privilege of crossing paths with
this beautiful woman learned some of what love is.
Mom, we miss you so already; may we never forget how
you taught us to love.
Janice is survived by her husband of 53 years and her
sons: Michael of Logan, Monty (Sherri) of Providence,
Darren (Lori) of Centerville, Jeffrey (Kellie) of
Providence, Lindsay (Paula) of Memphis, Tennessee, and
of course all of her “perfect” 23 grandchildren and 4
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents L. Winslow
and Hester Hurst, and her sister Karen Lanier.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday,
June 23 at the Lundstrom Park LDS Chapel located at
1260 North 1600 East in Logan. A viewing will be held
from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday evening June 22 at

to the funeral services.

in Ogden, Utah.
