Joan Nelson
LOGAN, UTAH: Joan Nelson, 76, died Thursday, March 3,
2005 in Orem, Utah. She was born September 27, 1928
in Tremonton, Utah to Edgar and Janet H. Nelson. Her
early years were spent on the family farm in Howell,
Utah. She graduated from Bear River High School,
graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young
University, and completed a master’s degree in social
work at the University of Utah.
An excellent executive secretary and administrative
assistant, Joan worked at Utah Oil Company, then as an
executive secretary to President Daryl Chase at Utah
State University, and later became administrative
secretary to Harvey Taylor, a vice president at BYU
and later chancellor of LDS Church Schools. Her last
employment was as a social worker in Granite School
District.
A member of the LDS Church, she served as a missionary
in the Texas-Louisiana Mission, taught in all of the
church auxiliaries, and was president of a BYU stake
YWMIA.
Joan was a thoughtful and caring daughter to her
widowed mother, a supportive and generous sister, a
loyal and delightful friend, and absolutely the
world’s greatest aunt.
She is survived by her brothers, Carl J and Marlene
Nelson of St. George; James E. Nelson, West Valley
City, a sister, Joyce of Provo with whom she shared a
close and loving relationship; her nephew, Michael K.
Nelson (Laurie) and their four sons, Brady, Eric, Ryan
and Jeffrey, her nieces Laurie (Don) Stewart, and Lynn
(Kelly) Mecham and their daughters, Amanda and
Melissa, all of Bountiful. She was preceded in death
by her mother and father.
The family would like to thank Dr. Philip Roberts of
Sandy and his two nurses, Mary and Laurel for their
professional expertise and their long-time
compassionate and loving care; all the staff of Canyon
Breeze Senior Living in Orem for extending the love
and care worthy of true saints and angels; and all at
Alpine Hospice Care who cared so lovingly for Joan
during the last weeks of her life.
Joan’s friends and relatives are invited to share
their memories of her at a memorial service that will
be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, March 7, 2005 at the
Allen-Hall Mortuary in Logan, 34 East Center. A
