Ralph Bernell Maughan
Logan--Ralph Bernell Maughan, 83, revered husband,
father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away
on Monday, July 3, 2006.
Ralph was born on December 10, 1922, in Hyrum, Utah,
the fifth child of Robert Baxter and Marvel Petersen
Maughan. He was raised in Cache County in Hyrum, Utah,
and graduated from South Cache High School. He
attended Utah State University where he excelled in
athletics. Before he went to war he had met his only
true love, Byrnece Hansen, and on a furlow from World
War II he came home and they were married in the Salt
Lake City Temple, August 29, 1944.
He is survived by his wife, Byrnece, and two children,
Ralph Bernell Jr. (Jackie), Pocatello, Idaho, and
Suzanne (Randy) Wilson, Logan, Utah, one brother,
Murray Maughan and one sister, Marie White. He has 6
grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his mother and father, older
brothers, Ferris and Theodore and sister, Marion Rust.
He coached 4 Olympians, 11 All Americans, 3 NCAA
Champions, 2 World Record holders and 2 NCAA record
holders, placed in the top 20 NCAA Championships 9
times. He published 15 track publications that have
been used throughout the world.
He held many church positions and served in the LDS
Bishopric and in the High Council. He had a profound
effect on many young men who were in his programs and
I'm sure he will be in their hearts forever.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday,
July 8, at the Providence Stake Center, 800 South 600
East, River Heights. Friends and family may call from
6 to 8:30 pm Friday, at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East
Center, Logan or at the Church on Saturday, from 11 -
12:30 prior to services. Interment will be at the
Logan Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed at
