Ruth Burleigh Call
Logan, Utah: Ruth Burleigh Call, recognized as a
master in developing creativity in young people, died
during the early morning hours of Wednesday, November
10,2004. Her four adult children, her husband, W.
Vosco Call and a number of grandchildren were at her
bedside.
Utah State University awarded Ruth a lifetime
membership in the Old Main Society and she was a
recipient of the Utah State University Women's Center
"Woman of the Year" award in 1997. Ruth was the
founder and artistic director of Cache Valley's
Unicorn Children's Theatre. She served on the founding
Board of Directors for the Capitol Arts Alliance, and
served on a number of other boards, including the
Alliance for the Varied Arts, KUSU, and the Cache
Children's Choir. Her most recent recognition was this
year from the Utah Theatre Association in
"appreciation for many years of service to community
theatre in Utah."
Beyond contributing to the development of many fine
amateur and professional theatre people, Ruth Call was
an outstanding actress in her own right. She often
appeared with her husband in significant productions
in Seattle, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and in Logan for
Utah State Theatre and the Old Lyric Repertory
Company. She was educated at USU and did specialized
work at the University of Washington and University of
Minnesota, and with the renowned Dorothy Heathcote of
England.
Ruth was born in a large rock farmhouse on the Roundy
ranch in Cache Junction, Utah on August 25, 1928. She
was an only child of Fern Roundy and Horace Lyman
(Dick) Burleigh. She is survived by her husband, W.
Vosco Call and their children, Regan Johnston, Logan,
W. Vosco Jr., Minneapolis, MN, Ruth Allyn Ferguson,
Logan, and Richard Burleigh, Burley, ID.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday,
November 16th, at the Allen-Hall Mortuary (34 E.
Center St.) in Logan, Utah. Friends may call from 6 to
8 pm on Monday at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, and one
hour prior to the service on Tuesday. In lieu of
flowers the family invites donations toward the
establishment of a Ruth B. Call Memorial Scholarship,
the purpose of which is to foster theatrical
production for young people. Such donations should be
made in her name to the Utah State University
Development Office. Burial will be in the Logan
Cemetery under the direction of Allen-Hall Mortuary.
