SMITHFIELD, UTAH: Reed Stewart Roberts, 86, passed away Sunday, November 12, 2006 at the Logan Regional Hospital.

Reed was born November 14, 1919 in Salt Lake City Utah to Benjamin Henry and Loye Stewart Roberts. He attended Whittier Elementary School in Salt Lake City, Utah and then attended third through sixth grade at the Woodruff Elementary School in Logan. He graduated from Logan Junior High, Logan High School (1937) and Utah State University with B.S. (1942) and M.S (1947) degrees. He also worked on his PhD at University of Utah and University of Kansas.

He married Marie Pendrey Roberts in the Logan Temple, Logan, Utah on August 6, 1947. Reed served in the US Army's Asian theatre as an Entomological Technician during WWII. He was stationed in the Philippines, with the 40th Malaria Survey Unit. Reed's expertise in this area was indispensable in his later role at USU as an extension entomologist.

From 1954-1960, Reed was employed as a Sanitarian for the Utah State Department of Health where he covered Cache, Rich and Box Elder Counties. In 1960, Reed retired from the Army Reserve as a captain in the Medical Service Corps.

In 1963-1964 he participated in a Peace Corps program at USU for Morocco, Iran and Venezuela. He attended a training program at Peace Corps headquarters in Washington, DC. This same year, Reed was nominated as one offive finalists for the USU professor of the Year Award. He was chosen as the recepient of the Pickett-Webb award as the Sanitarian of the Year by the Utah Association of Sanitarians.

He wrote a section on biological science for an elementary school teacher's manual, Science for First Grade, published by USU. He was also co-author with three other USU professors of Principles of Biology Laboratory Exercises which was published by USU. He was co­author of School Health Supplement (course material for USU course on Public Health) and Laboratory Experiments in Elementary Bacteriology. Both were published by USU.

At USU, Reed taught Bacteriology, Public Health, School Health, and General Entomology. In the later years of his career he worked at Utah State University as an Extension Entomologist. He retired from Utah State University June 30, 1984 after 24 years as a teacher and an Extension Entomologist.

He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in many callings. He and his wife, Marie served a mission at the Employment Center in Logan. At the time of his death he was a home teacher in the Smithfield Tenth Ward. Reed loved gardening at the family's cabin at Bear Lake, visiting with his friends and neighbors, and most of all, the times his family was together. He was delighted when the grandchildren shared their college textbooks with him and would read them cover to cover.

He studied French, Spanish, German, philosophy and math and had fun challenging his grandchildren to figure out how much they weighed in kilograms. He worked as a Literacy Volunteer for the Logan Library, as a member of the Logan City Tree Board, judged 4H projects, and worked with many Scouts on their merit badges.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie Pendrey Roberts and his children, Louan (Burke) Christensen, Jim (Barb) Roberts, Linda (Jeff) Champlin and John (Sandi) Roberts, 19 amazing grandchildren and 5 beautiful great grandchildren. He is also survived by one niece, Karen Pendrey.

Reed was preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law, LeGrand Pendrey.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 16th at 12:00 pm in the Smithfield 10th Ward chapel, 350 East 300 South. There will be a viewing Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm and at the church on Thursday from 10:30 - 11:30 am. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion.
