Richard Newel Winget, Sr.
Richard Newel Winget, Sr. passed away Friday, June 2nd
at his home in Logan, Utah. R.N. was born April 29,
1927 to Newel and Veta Winget in Monroe, Utah. R.N.
married Donna Ruth Harry October 30, 1950. They were
later sealed in the Logan LDS Temple and were happily
married for 57 years.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints and served as a Sunday School
teacher, Scout Leader, and Ward Clerk. In addition,
he was a faithful Home Teacher for many years.
R.N. served for two years with the Merchant Marines
during World War II. After being honorably discharged
he joined his parents in the operation of Winget’s Ice
Cream. They began on Center Street in Logan selling
malts for l0 cents then moved Winget’s Ice Cream to
South Main Street where they added a bakery,
chocolates, and a restaurant.
After working with his parents for many years, R.N
assumed responsibility for Winget’s Ice Cream and
Winget’s Drive-In. Additionally, he owned and
operated a drive-in in Smithfield. Later, R.N. and
Donna opened the Beau la Reine Beauty College on South
Main. They enjoyed several successful years at that
location then moved the Beau la Reine to 10th North
and Main. R.N. enjoyed salesmanship spending several
years working for Advanced Schools selling educational
courses. Later, he also sold beauty supplies.
Many will remember R.N. by the fun and educational
school assemblies he put on using hypnosis. From
North Cache to Logan to South Cache, students still
mention the exciting hypnosis assemblies.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Newel and
Veta Winget.
He is survived by his wife Donna, his daughter Shari
W. Alvey (Cless) of Richmond, his son Richard Newel
Winget, Jr. (Wendy) of Pennsylvania, his seven
grandchildren Nichole Johnson (Cameron), Angie
Sorensen (Matt), Jodie Bishop (Scott) all of
Smithfield, Brett Alvey of Richmond, Holly Winget of
Pennsylvania, Laurie Andrus (Jason) of St. George, and
Ashley Winget of Pennsylvania, as well as nine
great-grandchildren, and his sisters Pauline
Christiansen (Chris), Cheryl Hughes, and Pat Jones
(Ken) all of Salt Lake.
The family would like to take this opportunity to
give a heartfelt thank-you to Alpine Hospice with a
special thanks to Julie Bennett, Pat Sadoski, Gilbert
Hull, Dennis Wildman, and Dr. Ali Ben-Jacob.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon,
Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary
Chapel, 34 East Center Street, where friends may call
prior to services from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Interment will
be in the Logan City Cemetery.
