Sarah Chipman Scholes
Sarah Kathryn Chipman Scholes of Smithfield died
Monday, December 25, 2006 at age 89 after a long
illness. She was preceded in death by her
husband,William, last month.
She was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah on August 16,
1917, to Dora Elizabeth Priday and Alva B. Chipman.
She married William A. Scholes in the Logan LDS Temple
on September 16, 1938. They are parents of Katherine
(Lyman) Godfrey, North Logan; Karen (LeRoy) Goodey,
Clarkston; Wm. Mark Scholes, South Jordan; Barbara
(David) Kent, Smithfield, and Bonnie Anderson, Logan.
Two Indian Placement students, Jimmy Benally and Elsie
Martinez, lived with the family for several years.
She graduated from South Cache High School and entered
the Budge Hospital Nursing School in Logan where she
completed her RN degree in 1938.
As newlyweds, Sally and Bill went to Ann Arbor, Michigan where he continued his education and she
worked as a nurse. She was by his side through
schooling, employment and church service throughout
their married life. Through her declining years, he
was by her side caring for her needs.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints. She served faithfully in the
organizations of the Church and as a missionary with
her husband in Kiribati and Guam in the early
eighties.
Her hobby was people. Sally made many life-long
friends through her nursing career at the Logan
Hospital and Sunshine Terrace. As a student nurse she
accompanied Dr. McGee on more than 100 home
deliveries. In the late forties and early fifties she
often bathed newborn babies while their mothers gained
their strength back. Many people came to her for
injections, routine medical advice and loving support.
Our home was often filled with people she was helping.
It was not unusual for her to volunteer to stay with
homebound individuals so family members could attend
important events. In her retirement years, she
continued to seek out the sick and lonely, blessing
many lives with her cheerful visits.
Sally was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She
is survived by her children, 25 grandchildren, 24
great-grandchildren, and a brother, R. Burke Jensen of
Provo. She was preceded in death by her husband, her
parents, brothers Stan and Tom Chipman, sister Louise
Gillespie Fitzwater, and an infant son.
