Anna Elizabeth Coulson Embry
North Logan: Anna Elizabeth Coulson Embry was born 16
May 1915 and died 10 September
2003.
She grew up in Nephi, Utah, the daughter of
Jesse and Lydia Rowbury Coulson. In 1936
she completed her nursing training at Holy Cross
Hospital, took a job in Kanab, UT and gave it
up for one at the old Logan Hospital where she rose to
chief surgical nurse, the position she held
when she married Bertis L. Embry in the Logan Temple
six months before Pearl Harbor.
In the
war years they crisscrossed the country several times
but she came back to Nephi when Bert went
to Europe shortly after VE day. She was wife, mother
and chief logistics officer for the family
through degrees at Stanford and University of
Missouri, summer courses at Argonne National
Lab (outside Chicago) and Cornell University and
international assignments in Iran and
Guatemala.
She was an active member of the LDS Church
and served an active mission with her
husband in Spain. Anna updated her nursing skills
while Bert was finishing a PhD in Columbia,
MO. Back in Utah, she worked for Sunshine Terrace and
as a Cache County Public Nurse.
When Bert began to show signs of dementia at about age
80, her goal was to stand by him. She
did that and stayed another four years, perhaps to
teach us patience. As annoying as her
repetitions could be, she was also a source of endless
amusement.
Anna Embry is survived by
her children Lloyd Bertis (Kim), Hunters Point WA;
Lydia Ann, North Logan and Oakland, CA;
Janet Iola, Salt Lake City; Jessie Louise, Provo and
Leo James (Kim). Ft Collins, CO and
grandchildren Christopher Lloyd, Melissa Rose, Anna
Ruth, Ryan James, Sarah Kim and
Stephen Bertis. The rest of us want to thank Jessie
for the succor she gave.
We also
acknowledge Orem Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for
picking up the details freeing us to be
only a loving presence as her life ended. Funeral
services will be Saturday, 13 September 2003 at
12:00 noon in the North Logan Third Ward, 1850 North
400 East, North Logan, UT under the
direction of Allen-Cranney Mortuary. Friends may call

Friday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Saturday at the
