Glenn "T" Baird
LOGAN, UTAH: Glenn “T” Baird passed away in his home
of 55 years on February 24, 2004. He was the oldest
child of Walter and Amelia Tree Baird and was born in
Ogden, Utah on July 29, 1912. He spent his youth in
Ioka, Utah and left the “Basin” in 1930 to attend Utah
State Agricultural College. He graduated in agronomy
in 1935 and earned a master’s degree from the
University of Maryland. He spent 35 years with
Extension Services in Montana and Utah.
He served the community as a Logan City Councilman.
He was a bishop, high councilor, stake president,
Michigan Lansing Mission President, Sunday School
teacher, and home teacher. He presided with dignity
and love as patriarch of our family. On the Thursday
before his passing, he said, “I still have something
to contribute to this family.” For many months he has
diligently prepared a series of scripture study guides
that will continue to school his family in the ways of
the Savior.
He married Evelyn Mair on December 23, 1936 in the
Logan Temple. It is because of her conscientious and
consistent loving care that he lived into his
ninety-second year in spite of many physical ailments.
Daddy liked to garden, ponder the scriptures, and
listen to the News Hour with Jim Lehrer. He saved
everything: old farm tools, milk cans, nails from
Grandpa Mair’s barn, twine from hay bales, stacks of
wood, and little pieces of paper with uplifting
quotations. The roto-tiller was always carefully
covered with canvas before winter came.
A son, Theron, preceded him in death in 2002. The
following children survive: Sharell and Richard Eames,
Providence; Charlene and Mark Austin, Centerville;
Jennifer Baird, Orem; Dennis and Pam Baird, Brigham
City; and Janet and Michael Smith, South Jordan. He
is called “Grandpa” by 27 grandchildren and 44
great-grandchildren, including Theron’s grandson,
Zachary Wood, who also passed away in 2002.
A brother, Bruce, Garland; a sister, Avalon Allen,
Washington Terrace; a sister-in-law, Frances Baird,
Clinton; and a sister- and brother-in-law, Elaine and
Norman Hadfield, Logan; also survive him. His
brothers, Keith and Oliver, and sisters, Elva Jones
and Violet Nelson, preceded him in death.
We are most grateful for the many years of
professional care provided by Dr. Michael Stones and
for the recent services of Hospice nurse Bill Memmott
and aide John Sargent.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 2, at
noon in Daddy’s long-time place of worship, the
5th-18th Ward chapel on the Boulevard. The family
will meet with extended family and friends on Monday,
March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Allen-Hall Mortuary,
34 East Center, Logan, and again on Tuesday morning,
10:30 to 11:45 a.m., at the church. The family
suggests contributions to The Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints Missionary or Perpetual Education
funds. Online condolences may be sent to the family at
Allen-Hall Mortuary.
