Joseph Dalmaine Hodges
Logan, Utah; Grieve not my friends! On June 2, 2003,
I Joseph Dalmaine Hodges was freed from my battle with
pain and misery and was able to offer my soul to our
Creator. Please celebrate the joys of my life.
I was born on July 15, 1916, in Logan, Utah; as the
only son of Maud Olive Kearl and Joseph Hodges. As a
young boy I developed my life long friendships with
Boyde, Mose, and Benny. We did everything together,
including high school football. My love for cars
started in high school when I was lucky enough to be
one of the few to drive my own car. It was also at
this time I learned the milling business from my
father Joseph, owner of White Rose Flour.
I graduated from Logan High School and finished 2
years of college at Utah State Agriculture College. I
served for 3 ½ years as a missionary for the LDS
Church in the Netherlands just prior to World War II.
I was asked to extend my mission for 6 months to
prepare a mission tour for President Heber J. Grant
and to serve as his translator.
After returning from my mission I met and married
Gwen Johnson on August 27, 1939 in the Salt Lake
Temple. We lived in Logan ever since and raised our
two children there.
I went back into the wheat milling business. At the
beginning of WWII, I tried to enlist, but was told by
the US Government to stay home and process food for
the nation rather than fight for it.
After WWII and the second time our flour mill burned
to the ground, I changed to raising and milling
alfalfa. I retired in 1978 to travel with Gwen and
friends.
I was active in church as Teacher’s Quorum President
and then after my mission I was Young Men’s
President. Later, I served for 9 years in the Logan
Williamsburg Branch Presidency. I served for 72 years
as a home teacher.
I am survived by my son Joseph Michael (Fran) Hodges,
daughter Karen (Michael) Teuscher; 14 grandchildren,
39 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Ethel Maero of
Salt Lake. I was preceded in death by my beloved
wife, Gwen, my parents, two sisters, Irene Weston and
Kay Cooley, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 7, 2003 at 12
PM at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St.,
Logan, Utah. Friends may call on Friday evening from
6-8 PM at the mortuary and on Saturday beginning at 11
AM. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
Condolences may be sent to the family at
Allen-Hall Mortuary.
