Kelly Gurell Maughan
Kelly Gurell Maughan of Wellsville, age 50, passed
away on July 27,2004 in a motorcycle accident in
Corinne, Utah. Kelly was born in Logan, Utah on March
22, 1954 to Seth P. and Margaret G. Maughan of
Wellsville, Utah.
Kelly attended Cache County schools and graduated from
Sky View High School in 1972. He enlisted in the Army
shortly after graduation. He received electronic
training at Ft. Devins, Massachusetts while in the
Army and was in the Army Security Agency as an
electronic technician, 1973-1977. He received the
Trainee of the Cycle Award, the Rifle Marksman of
Cycle, and was honorably discharged as a Spec 5. He
was also enlisted in the Utah National Guard as an NBC
Specialist, 1981-1982.
Kelly worked at Thiokol Corporation/ATK from July 1981
to the present. While working at Thiokol, he completed
managerial development classes and received the NASA
Recognition Award, Superior Performer Award, the TQM
Team Award, Space Quality Award, the Silver Snoopy and
several performance awards.
Kelly was involved in church and community activities
all of his life. He was a faithful and devout follower
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and
held many positions throughout his lifetime. He
especially enjoyed working with young people. Kelly
was an Eagle Scout with Two Palms. He was actively
involved in the restoration of the Wellsville
Tabernacle as a member of the Wellsville Foundation
for many years.
Hobbies included beekeeping, horseback riding, wheat
weaving, fishing, singing (Barbershop Men's Chorus and
Ward Choir), whittling and telling stories. Kelly
loved to camp. He was a dedicated and loving father.
He was very health conscious and loved going to the
gym. Kelly loved riding on his motorcycle around the
valley; he had a great appreciation for the valley he
grew up in. He was also a firm believer in hard work
and responsibility. Teasing was especially important.
Kelly was married in the Switzerland Temple to Hilda
F. Maughan. They were later divorced. He was currently
engaged to Julie Reading. They were to be married
August 28, 2004.
Kelly is survived by his children Caleb (Beth),
Wellsville; Gideon, Wellsville; Josiah, Nampa, ill;
and Oralia, Wellsville; his grandchildren Natania and
Damian. He is also survived by Margaret G. Maughan,
mother, Wellsville; Valerie Maughan, sister-in-law,
Providence, UT; and siblings Colby (Brenda) Maughan,
Wellsville; Debra (Quentin) Cudney, Wellsville; Randy
(Kathy) Maughan, American Falls, ID; Dorcus (Stephen)
Kleinschuster, River Heights; Nolan Maughan,
Wellsville; Tracy (Jeanna) Maughan, Waco, TX; and Tom
(Jannette) Maughan, Wellsville.
Kelly was preceded in death by a son, Jacob, his
father, Seth P. Maughan, a brother, Gregory Maughan, a
sister-in-law, Yvonne Maughan, and a brother-in-law,
Stuart Wasson.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday,
July 31, 2004 at the Wellsville Stake Center. A
viewing will be held on Friday evening from 6 to 8 PM
at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, and prior to services at
the Stake Center from 11:30 AM to 1:15 PM. Burial
will be in the Wellsville City Cemetery.
