Lucy Rhee Berkemeier
Lucy Rhee Berkemeier, 42, passed away
September 21, 2003, at Logan Regional Hospital after
struggling with colon cancer.
She was born April 29, 1961 in Seoul, South Korea to
Jae Yoon and Yong Hee Rhee. She moved
to the United States in 1966. She spent most of her
childhood growing up in Ohio. She received
the BA degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
from Northwestern University in 1983.
Afterwards she joined her family in San Jose
California. While there, she developed an interest
in backpacking and through a community college class
met her future husband Matthew
Berkemeier. They were married in Los Gatos,
California on July 11, 1987. After living six years
in California, Lucy and Matthew moved to Lexington,
Massachusetts. While there, they were
blessed with two children, Kristen in 1994 and Lauren
in 1997. They moved to Logan, Utah in
1999.
She is survived by her husband of 16 years and her two
daughters, ages 6 and 9. She is also
survived by two brothers, James (wife: Jennifer) of
Ogden, Utah; John (wife: Julie) of Lafayette,
California; and her mother of San Jose, California.
She also left behind many friends from
Maranatha Baptist Church.
Lucy had a special talent for mastering activities she
pursued. She was very successful and
sought-after as a research assistant at both
Genentech, Inc., where she worked for seven years and
Millennium Pharmaceuticals, where she worked for four
years. She enjoyed photography and
took many beautiful photographs of Yosemite National
Park and of her family, which decorated
the walls of her house. She devoted considerable time
assembling scrapbooks containing her
photographs for her two daughters. She was a
wonderful cook, whose meals and desserts were
appreciated by her family, as well as others. She
loved gardening and maintained a beautiful
collection of flowers and other plants in her
backyard. She enjoyed sewing and made beautiful
gifts of clothing for her girls. She was a very
disciplined person who was skilled at organizing
and maintaining order in her house.
Lucy will also be remembered for her generosity. She
donated her time without reserve to
Maranatha Baptist Church as a Sunday school teacher
and crafts leader on many occasions. She
also showered her family and friends with many,
unexpected thoughtful gifts.
Lucy loved Jesus and, in her last months, longed to be
with Him and to be free of suffering. He
was her source of comfort. Although her family will
greatly miss her, they are comforted by the
knowledge that she is now in heaven and is enjoying a
much better life.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 24
from 10:30-11:45 AM at the Allen-Cranney
Mortuary, 420 East 1800 North, North Logan. The
memorial service will be held from 12:00-
1:00, also at Allen-Cranney. A lunch reception will
follow at 1:30 at Maranatha Baptist Church,
395 S Main. Nursery care will be provided at
Maranatha Baptist church for the entire duration.
The family appreciates the Logan Regional Hospital
doctors and staff, especially, Dr. Ali Ben-
Jacob.
