Norman C. Woods
Logan, Utah. Norman C. Woods left this earth
peacefully and with no pain from his home with his
family at his side and entered the loving arms of our
Savior and Lord Jesus Christ on November 12, 2003 at
6:10 PM.
Dad was born in Portland, Oregon on January 3, 1925
to Clyde Randolph Woods and Bertha Julia (Cox) Woods.
He was the fourth born of eight children.
The family moved to Santa Rosa, California in
December 1933. Dad attended Santa Rosa grade schools
and Santa Rosa High School, leaving in 1942 to work
with his brother Mike in southern California.
Dad enlisted in the United States Army on April 1,
1943, and served in the 43rd Infantry Division in the
Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II
where he was awarded an Asiatic Battle Ribbon, 2
Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for battles on New
Guinea and the Northern Soloman Islands. He was
Honorably discharged on October 12, 1945.
On April 13, 1947 he was married to our mom Ruth
Marie Hanson, daughter of Percy B. and Helen P.
(LeCornec) Hanson of Santa Rosa, California in Saint
Rose Catholic Church, Santa Rosa, California. Their
first child Cheryl Ann was born in Santa Rosa, CA on
March 15, 1949. Their second child Patricia Marie was
born in San Mateo, CA on August 22, 1951. Their third
child Steven Paul was born in Lake Tahoe, CA on
January 3, 1960.
Prior to moving to the south shore of Lake Tahoe, CA
on December 15, 1958, Dad and Mom lived in San
Francisco, CA, South San Francisco, CA, Vallejo, Ca
and Santa Rosa, CA. While in Santa Rosa Dad served as
the commander of Theodore Roosevelt Post 21 of The
American Legion, was a member of the Junior Chamber of
Commerce and recording secretary of the YMCA.
After arriving in Lake Tahoe on December 15, 1958,
Dad and Mom had a very successful and rich life in
Lake Tahoe for 41 years. Dad was a General Building
Contractor and politician over those 41 years. Dad had
many accomplishments while in Tahoe including the
following: He was one of the five founding fathers of
the City of South Lake Tahoe when the city was formed
in 1965, he served on the original City Council,
served on the council for 21 years, was Mayor 8 times
and was given the title and honor of “ Mayor
Emeritus”. In what he called the “ Crowning
achievement” of his public service career, Dad was
elected and served as the President of The League of
California Cities in 1991-1992. “The frosting on the
cake as far as my political life”.
He was also a board member of many organizations over
the 41 years including the California Tahoe Regional
Planning Agency (CTRPA) the Tahoe Regional Planning
Agency (TRPA), Barton Memorial Hospital (18 years),
Lake Valley Fire Protection District later serving as
the Chairman of the Board, South Lake Tahoe Chamber of
Commerce and later given the honor of “Life Time”
member, Tahoe Resource Conservation District and many
others.
He was a volunteer fireman for the Lake Valley Fire
Protection District, President of St Theresa’s parents
club, a member of the Lions Club, Elks Club, Charter
member of the South Lake Tahoe Boat Club, Roosters
club, South Lake Tahoe Rotary Club, Knights of
Columbus, Toastmasters Club, Ducks Unlimited and
Stella Johnson Post 795 of The American Legion. Dad
loved Lake Tahoe and always gave of himself for the
betterment of “Gods Country.”
Dad and Mom moved to Logan, Utah on November 9, 1999
to be close to their family and for medical care
necessary for Dads long and valiant fight as a warrior
against Heart disease, Diabetes, Kidney failure and
Cancer. Dad was very proud to become a member of the
Logan Rotary Club along with his son Steve in January
2000.
Dad was preceded in death by his parents and sister
Betty. He is survived by his wife Ruth, daughters
Cherie and Pattie, son Steve (Penny), grandsons Steven
and Matthew, and best friends Don and Marilyn Wright
all of Logan. He is also survived by his brothers
Clyde (Angie), Mike (Sharon), Bob (Iona) Frank (Mardy)
and sisters Sue (Oscar) Faoro and Phyllis. Grandson
Eric Hill, Granddaughters Leslie (Phil) Melodia, Sarah
Woods, Amy Cluff, and Great Granddaughter Sierra
Trujillo and many other family members.
A viewing will be held on Friday November 21, 2003
from 4:00 to 8:00 PM with the Rosary following the
viewing at 8:30 PM. The viewing and Rosary will be
held at McFarlane Mortuary, located at 887 Emerald Bay
Road/ Hwy 89, South Lake Tahoe, CA.. Funeral Services
will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday November 22, 2003
at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church located at 1041 Lyons
Ave. in South Lake Tahoe, followed by burial with full
military honors at Happy Homestead Cemetery located at
1261 Johnson Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of
Allen-Hall Mortuary, Logan, Utah and McFarlane
Mortuary, South Lake Tahoe, CA.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that
donations be made to the following charity of your
choice: First being the “Rotary International Polio
Plus Program” to eliminate Polio from the earth by
