Retta Mathews Jensen
Logan, Utah: RETTA MATHEWS JENSEN 87, passed away
Sunday Sept. 07,2003 at Williamsburg Retirement center
where she had lived the last 4 ½ years. She was a
member of the Latter-day Saints Church, Cache Stake
First Branch.
Born March 02, 1916 in Providence Utah, along with her
fraternal twin LaGrand; to Leon Robins Mathews and Georgia Stella Grant.
Mother graduated from South Cache High School, worked
for the Eccles family and the
Logan Knitting Mills before meeting Lorenzo Hyrum
Jensen in 1938.
They were married in
Brigham City, Utah August 22, 1938. They were sealed
in the Logan Temple on December 10, 1958. Dad died in
January 1987. Mother worked hard on her and Dad’s
small fruit and orchard farm on the South Bench in
Providence. She worked about 15 years at the L.D.S.
Hospital, then
went to Hollywood Beauty Collage and had her own
beauty shop until 1994.
Mother had a
yearning for knowledge, and took many classes,
learning skills and creating many beautiful heirlooms.
She was proud of her many accomplishments but the ones
she was most proud were her 4 Sons and 4 Daughters:
Alan (Mary), Providence; Reed M., Logan; Don M.,
Hyrum; Leon (Laura) Providence; Georgia (Vernon)
Mattson, West Jordan; currently serving an L.D.S.
Mission in Leeds, England; Joy (Del) Friedli,
Providence; Hollie Peterson, Salt Lake City; Darcie
(Randy) Tew, Salt Lake City; 26 Grandchildren and 21
Great-Grandchildren.
Mother was proud of her heritage and is survived by 2
brothers and 2 sisters, LaGrand
(Elle) Mathews, Logan; Leon (Ida) Mathews, Cina. Ohio;
Yvonne (Gene) Anderson, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Charlotte
(Chuck) Gullo, Palmdale, California; Ann (Grant,
deceased) Mathews, Providence. She was preceded in
death by her parents, her husband, 2 brothers and 2
sisters, Grant Mathews, Hopkin Mathews, Afton M.
Balls, and Jean Petersen Lundgreen, 2 Grandchildren
also preceded her in death.
The family wish to thank Dr. Jeffrey Strong for his
care and support and his sense
of humor, against all odds, in his caring for Mother.
To Cathy Hall, R.N. who became more than Mother's
Nurse, her friend, her confidant, and
the strength the family relied on daily, we love you.
To the staff and many friends at Williamsburg we thank
you for helping Mother enjoy her last years with us.
Funeral services will be held at 12 Noon, Thursday,
September 11, 2003 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary Chapel,
34 East Center Street, Logan with Branch President
Melvin Foster conducting. Friends may call at the
mortuary on Thursday, from 10:30-11:45 a.m. prior to
services. Interment will be in the Providence Cemetery.
