Ruby Hansen Sorenson
Ruby Hansen Sorenson, age 101, passed away July 14,
2004, at the Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation
facility. She was born February 21, 1903 in Iona,
Idaho to Charles Walter Hansen and Mary Ann Lee, the
oldest of 10 children.
She was a very gifted child
and was advanced two grades in school. She often
assisted the teachers with other students. She left
Iona to attend Brigham Young College in Logan. Upon
completion of her schooling at the B.Y.C. she returned
to Iona and taught school for two years.
She married
James V. (Slim) Sorenson in the Logan Temple June 8,
1922. He died Sept. 6, 1981. They were the parents of
five children: James C. (dec) (Mary, Tacoma, WA), John
V. (dec) (Margaret, Montgomery, AL), Fred R. (dec)
(Jean, dec), Renee S. Hyde, (Dr. Charles, dec) North
Logan, and David W. (Lee Ann) Logan.
She is survived
by her youngest sister Beth H. Sanderson, Iona, Idaho
and a sister-in-law Bertha A. Hansen, Ogden, Utah.
Ruby was a voracious reader and read until her
eyesight failed her at age 96.
She had a great
devotion to education. She loved flowers, especially
African Violets. An avid genealogist, she did
extensive research on her ancestral lines and kept
considerable records of her research. A wonderful
seamstress, she made clothes for children and
grandchildren alike. She also loved to make dolls.
She created dolls to represent her female genealogical
ancestors.
She loved to sing and had great musical
talents. A master teacher, she could be found helping
many a child to read and succeed in school.
She was a stalwart member of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints having served in numerous
church positions throughout her life. She worked at
Second Street in Ogden during WWII while her three
oldest sons served in the military. She possessed a
wonderful sense of humor, and was an accomplished
story teller. To her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren she was known as “Candy Grandma.”
She lived a full life and resided in her own home
until age 98. She left a high water mark for her
posterity to follow. Now she can meet those many
ancestors that she became familiar with in her
genealogical research.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 16,
2004 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center, Logan,
with Bishop Jens Trauntvein conducting. Friends may
